Tom Pryce was a Welsh professional racing driver who competed in Formula One from 1974 to 1977. He was considered one of the brightest talents of his generation and at the age of just 27, he had achieved a lot in his racing career. However, on March 5th, 1977, Pryce was involved in a fatal crash during the South African Grand Prix, which claimed his life along with that of a marshal.
During the second lap of the race, a young marshal named Jansen van Vuren ran onto the track to attend to another driver's car that had broken down. Pryce, who was driving at high speeds, was unable to see the marshal until it was too late and collided with him at over 170mph. The impact was so severe that both van Vuren and Pryce were killed instantly.
The accident was highly controversial, as there were several safety concerns raised about the marshaling at the race. The following year, the FIA introduced new safety measures for pit lane activities and track marshaling to avoid such accidents. The tragic incident left a lasting legacy on Formula One and is still remembered by fans as one of the sport's darkest moments.
